Reason of sale:  This fantasy sword was made with parts from a previous production that have not past our quality control due to aesthetic flaws. There is a very surface scratch on the blade. Placed prominently just below the guard sits the slit-pupil Eye of the Dark Lord, radiating spiked lines of dark magic. Cascading up the lower third of the blade is an intertwined cluster of jagged, razor-sharp thorns, symbolizing the choking grip of Mordor. Flowing downward from the Eye is the etched inscription “Sauron’s Will.” written in Tengwar.

Reason of sale: This bastard sword was created with parts that have not passed our quality control tests (minor Aesthetic flaws). The guard and blade show some very minor signs scratches (see image gallery for details). The blade is a type XI. It was the dominant weapon of the knightly class from the 11th through the 14th centuries, serving as a versatile companion to the primary battlefield lance. The sword is made with a 34" blade, with parallel edges that taper gracefully to an acute, penetrating point. This design reflects the historical shift in warfare during the 13th and early 14th centuries, where blades required a balance between devastating cutting capability against mail armor and a precise point to find the gaps in early plate reinforcement.  The base of the blade is acid etched in Latin, reading "confirmatus in christo V.XXXI.MMXVI Manu Forti". 

In hand, the sword feels like a classical medieval knight sword should. Strong, responsive and powerful. This is a beautiful cut and thrust sword that is capable of taking and delivering considerable abuse.

This exquisite piece is a Victorian copy of an earlier Gothic-style arm kit including vambrace, rerebrace, and couter. Like so many Victorian reproductions the original has been replicated in exacting detail right down to the rivets and hinges. 

The vambrace and rerebrace both have the attractive ridges of classical Gothic plate, flowing seamlessly into the lines of the armor. The couter is broad and fluted with a raised point at the elbow, providing not only protection but a potentially dangerous weapon in its own right –someone in Gothic plate is never unarmed. Despite its age the armor has only a light patina in some areas, retaining its luster and sheen – clearly, this piece was well cared for in its life as an antique. An attractive centerpiece for any collection, this Gothic arm armor comes to us from a prestigious collection and is now available for purchase for one fortunate collector.

The Saga of the Volsungs, also known as the Völsunga saga, is one of our most famous surviving epic works of prose in Old Norse. A 13th century work based on a much older myth and Legend. In these sagas, Viking warriors were masters of the axe, a weapon as vital to their survival as it was to their conquests. Named for the shieldmaiden, hero, and architect of one of the most bloody and decisive revenge stories in Norse lore, the Gudrun Norse Viking Axe is our newest axe design. From the pages of the Völsunga saga, Gudrun (Guðrún) is a stirring tale of someone pushed too far until the weight of her many burdens causes her to take matters into her own hands and leaves a bloody and fiery swath of destruction behind her as a result. Decorated with a Viking knotwork design depicting the Midgard Serpent, this long-bladed and straight-necked Viking axe is a design both classic and capable. Its hardwood handle provides a stable and comfortable grip, and is long enough to provide the torque needed for powerful blows against Shield, helmet, or enemy. A balance between functionality and work of art, the Gudrun Norse Viking Axe would do any Viking proud - especially shieldmaidens on a path to revenge.

C. 1400-1425, Type XIV blade.
The Philadelphia Museum of Art.

This is an extremely rare surviving example of a type of sword carried by Scottish knights. A similar sword is represented on a funeral monument believed to be that of Robert de Greenlaw (died 1411) at Kinkell, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. The original resides in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, having been bequeathed to the museum in the late 1970s from a private collection. The single-handed, double-edged sword is a unique take on the standard nightly arming sword designs, with upswept and flared cross guard matched with the classic wheel pommel with a peen block. The sword is named after the Scottish hero, Robert the Bruce, who united the clans during the war of Scottish independence and eventually turned the tide in the battle of Bannockburn.

In Norse culture, skalds were a special class of storyteller, poet, and historian who carried and passed on their people's mythology. The Darksword Armory Skald is inspired by those keepers of Viking Legend. More a short sword than a true dagger, the Anduril Dagger is a companion piece to our version of the most famous sword from The Lord of the Rings trilogy. The 21 inch blade is marked with elvish runes exactly the same as the full size Anduril sword, though as the runes are smaller and on a smaller steel canvas they appear even more intricate. Companion piece to our Alexandria sword, one of our most popular weapons based on a true historical model, the Alexandria dagger is a classic early 15th century design. The short (11"), double-edged blade has a diamond cross section, making it a stiff and unyielding weapon designed to be terribly effective at thrusting. The straight steel guard is a small version of the Alexandria swords guard with the distinctive swept tips that could catch the blade of an opponent. The classic wheel pommel is a twin to the one on the dagger's larger cousin. In Scandinavian, Birger means to “help and protect” – a name fitting for a beastly Norse axe. Inspired by the Midgard Serpent from Norse Mythology who is depicted in Norse knotwork on the head, the Birger Norse Viking axe is based on designs by the migration period of the Nordic people. The design of the head gives the axe a steep beard and long cutting edge, while keeping a solid neck and sharp spurs to reinforce and strengthen it for battle. Nearly 4 ft from end to end, the hardwood handle is extended to provide extra reach and torque for powerful, helmet (and head) splitting blows. Part of our Fallen Warrior sale lot, This Jousting helmet was used in for an A&E documentary. There are some scratches and minor dents (see pictures in image gallery). All straps are intact. 

Jousting emerged during the 12th C. from the military use of the lance by the mounted knight. During the latter part of the Middle Ages, jousting gained popularity in numerous kingdoms and was transformed into a lucrative event. Knights and nobles gained considerable wealth, prestige and land during such bouts, while merchants and artisans benefited from the ‘games’ by the distension of neighboring populations. While Jousting spread widely across the Christian kingdom, Pope Innocent II, in 1130, at a church council at Clermont, denounced all forms of ‘Noble’ tournaments and forbade Christian burials for Nobles killed in them. According to ecclesiastical ideas of morality, the ‘games’ distracted the aristocracy from focusing on more acceptable warfare, in defense of Christianity.

The Arundel Head is a Hellenistic bronze sculpture of a dramatist or king from Asia Minor, now kept in the British Museum . Dating to the 2nd-1st centuries BC, the head once belonged to, and takes its name from,  the famous English collector of classical antiquities Thomas Howard, 21st Earl of Arundel. The bronze sculpture was brought to England from Constantinople in the early seventeenth century as part of Thomas Howard's collection. 

The head is all that remains of a life-size bronze statue. The artist has realistically conveyed the worn features of an old man, including a wrinkled forehead, almond-shaped eyes and pouting mouth, which gives the portrait an air of power and authority. The hair of this bronze masterpiece is tied down in a ribbon, which suggests it may have portrayed a poet. Once thought to represent the ancient Greek writer Homer , it is currently considered to personify either the ancient Greek playwright Sophocles or Macedonian King. 

The bust was acquired by Darksword Armory founder, Eyal Azerad, who has now decided to part with it to make room for new pieces.

Head of Aphrodite, Cast from the original by the Louvre Museum workshop. The bust was acquired by Darksword Armory founder, Eyal Azerad, during the mid 1980’s during his visit to the Louvre. The bust is signed by the Museum workshop at the base of the neck. 

Aphrodite, also known as Venus in Roman mythology, is the ancient Greek goddess of love, beauty, desire, and fertility. She is one of the twelve Olympian gods and goddesses who resided on Mount Olympus. According to Greek mythology, Aphrodite was born from the foam of the sea near the island of Cyprus after the castration of the titan Uranus by his son Cronus.

Aphrodite is often depicted as a beautiful and seductive goddess, associated with love and desire. She had a significant influence over the realms of romance, passion, and procreation. Aphrodite was married to Hephaestus, the blacksmith of the gods, but she had numerous affairs and romantic entanglements with both gods and mortals, including Ares, the god of war.

Her symbols include the dove, the rose, the scallop shell, and the mirror. Aphrodite had a notable role in various myths and legends, such as the story of her love affair with the Trojan prince Paris, which was a catalyst for the Trojan War. She was also closely associated with the city of Athens, where she had a temple called the Aphrodite Pandemos, which represented her role in public and civic life.

The 15th-century Italian burbuta was a very versatile helmet used in much of European nations due to its unobstructive design, allowing greater visibility then closed helms, and mobility.  It was worn by foot soldiers, knights, and men-at-arms alike, making it suitable for different types of warfare. 

While the burbuta was not unique to Italy, it became particularly associated with Italian armorers, who excelled in producing finely crafted and beautifully decorated examples. Italian armorers of the 15th century were renowned for their expertise in metalworking and design, and the burbutes often showcased intricate embellishments and artistic flourishes. That said, the design of the Barbute was also made by Armorers in England, Germany, and other European nations.

A reduction of Baron Charles Marochetti's celebrated equestrian group of Emmanuel-Philibert, Duc de Savoie (1528-1580) created for the Piazza San Carlo in Turin. A triumph of mid-19th-century historical sculpture, it is considered today to be Marochetti's masterpiece. Baron Marochetti lived from January 14th 1805 to December 29th  1867. He was an Italian-born French sculptor who worked in France, Italy and Britain. He completed many highly prized public sculptures, often in a neo-classical style and large equestrian monuments in bronze and marble. Some of his best known public monuments include the bronze equestrian statue of Richard the Lionheart in front of the House of Lords at the Palace of Westminster in London.

Marochetti settled in England, where he received commissions from  Queen Victoria. Marochetti received great recognition during his lifetime, being made a baron in Italy and was awarded the Legion of Honor, the highest French order of Merit, by the French government.

Emmanuel-Philibert (1528-1580) was known for his military prowess and political innovations which strengthened the power of the house of Savoy in Piedmont. The monumental equestrian group cast by Soyer et Ingé was inaugurated in Turin in 1838, following a brief exhibition outside the Louvre in Paris several months before, where it was greeted with great acclaim which furthered Marochetti's reputation in Parisian artistic circles. Marochetti closely oversaw the subsequent production of bronze reductions of this group, authorising a very small number of foundries including De Braux d'Anglure and Susse Frères to create it in various sizes.

The Monarch exemplifies the classic 13th century Type X medieval sword. The type X was in common usage from the time of the Vikings throughout much of the middle ages, and is recognizable for its broad blade with full-length fuller. This version has a distinctive “Brazil nut” pommel, common to the mid-1200’s and beyond but most clearly represented on the type X to type XI transitory blades. The Monarch has the long, tapered blade typical of the cut-and-thrust swords that evolved to counter the increasing advances made in armor protection, and the curved guard is consistent with the numerous surviving 13th century Brazil nut swords found in museums and collections. The Monarch is a classic design that will be a unique presence in any collection.

Parrying daggers are a mainstay of European Renaissance fencing. Held in the off hand, the parrying dagger (or “main gauche”) allowed duelists to fight two handed against each other. Skilled fencers would use the parrying dagger in conjunction with a rapier for maximum effect. As these daggers were as much a part of a gentleman’s daily costume as they were for self defence they were often beautifully decorated as well as skillfully made. This design is based on a surviving late 16th, early 17th German example currently located in the Leeds Museum. It is named for master Italian fencer Fiore dei Libiri, author of Fior di Battaglia and Trattato della scherma.

"The Hastings" is an elegant design fostered by the classic hand-and-a-half sword of the Noman knights. Inspired by an Oakeshott Sub-Type XIIIa, this version has a double fuller which extends to ¾ the length of the blade. The sword is named after the Battle of Hastings, one of, if not, the most important battles in English history. The Battle of Hastings took place on October 14th 1066, and marked the end of Anglo-Saxon rule in Britain as well as leading to the introduction of the common law.

Provenance: originally from the Richard Francois Philippe Brunck collection (1729- 1803), a French classical scholar. He took part in the Seven Years War as military commissary. At the age of thirty he returned to Strasbourg to resume his studies. He spent fortunes to publish editions of the Greek classics. At the outbreak of the French Revolution (1789-1799), in which he took an active part, Brunck was imprisoned at Besancon. Upon his release, Richard Francois Philippe Brunk was forced to sell a large portion of his original library to cover his living expense.

A rare 18th-century German devotional prayer book by Adam Hermenegild. Thje volume covers the rules for moral living, devotion, prayers, and protection against evil spirits and magic. Hermenegild, a German priest, instructs the steps of exorcism on Witches (both human and animal) and the use of Holy Water. Exorcism instructions are also given to combat evil spirits within the Church.

The Gurthang is a sword inspired by a dark fate. In J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Silmarillion, the Gurthang is a meteoric iron sword originally forged by the Dark Elf Eöl but made most famous in the hands of the tragic hero Túrin Turambar. Unlike other swords in Toliien’s work Gurthang was said to have a personality, to rejoice in war and lament over the blood of the innocent. Countless orcs fell before its edge, and it was even used to slay the Father of Dragons. Our version of Gurthang is a two-handed longsword with a 32” double-fullered blade. The curved guard with elven script and black hardwood grip – carved with elegant knotwork – show the weapon’s Elven inspired heritage. The long handle and heavy pommel provide excellent leverage and bring the point of balance down close to the guard, giving this sword a lively presence. Holding it, one feels as though they too could face off against a dragon.

Inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Silmarillion, the Darksword Armory Ringil is a European-style sabre with a fantasy twist. In the ancient history of Middle Earth, Ringil was carried by the elven High King Fingolfin, the most valiant warrior who ever lived. One of the few named weapons in Tolkien’s works, Ringil was used by Fingolfin in his epic single combat against the Dark Lord Morgoth. This deadly Elven blade gave the Dark Lord wounds from which he never recovered. Our version of Ringil is single-edged, as were many of the Elven weapons of the Second Age depicted in the Peter Jackson Fellowship of the Ring prologue. A hand-and-a-half sabre, this sword is similar to 16th century Swiss designs – with a fantasy twist. With excellent handing, a carved hardwood handle, and Elven script on the blade this sword sits comfortable at the intersection of deadly and beauty.

Inspired by the Italian greatswords of the 16th century, the  Medici, type XVIIIb, Two-Handed Sword is a surprisingly elegant and nimble design. The long, slender blade is rendered a strong thrusting weapon due to the diamond cross-section, allowing it to slip between plates of armor and split rings of mail. Yet the reasonable point-of-balance and extended, leather-wrapped handle create a weapon that flows smoothly through guard, cut, and thrust, not limiting it to a single style of offence. The gracefully curved guard and scentstopper pommel complement the simple and straightforward blade, and everything is polished to a mirror sheen. The Medici, named for the Italian political dynasty that were for a time the de facto rulers of Italy, is a beautiful weapon that deserves to be a centrepiece in your home.

Based on the Type XX German Longswords of 16th century, the Olbrecht is a true warsword. A late evolution of the medieval sword, the Type XX’s broad, refined blade is designed to effect powerful strokes with devastating results. Twin fullers give the blade a unique design while both adding strength and reducing weight. Like many Renaissance two-handed warswords the handle is long and designed to provide adequate leverage for heavy blows. A scentstopper pommel (common to the Type XX) and long, slightly curved guard complete the weapon. While some of the larger two-handed swords of Type XX style were decorative in purpose, the Olbrecht is a true battle-ready sword – even if there are no longer battles for it to fight.

Blacksmithing, as a profession, was as much science as it was art. Metallurgy, engineering, chemistry, and physics – all of them went into the proper construction of arms and armor to ensure they would live up to the life-and-death demands placed upon them. As these arts advanced in understanding and complexity the goal turned from not only making functional articles of war but beautiful ones. As a result, those in arms and armor related industries have a strong appreciation for those historical artists whose work we admire and seek to emulate.

Among the tools used by blacksmiths, armorsmiths, and other historical metalworking artists were many common items. Anvils, hammers, and tongs are all recognizable even for someone with little to no knowledge of the field. An anvil hardy, though, would almost certainly confound the casual observer as to its origin and purpose. In fact, it could be mistaken for an axe head until the square feature at the base is recognized for what it is meant to do – to slip into the work hole at the top of an anvil and made fast for its use in shaping and cutting steel along with other, more delicate work.

This suit of miniature armor was acquired from a private collection in Milan. The piece is a Victorian reproduction dated to on or around 1820 CE. It stands 30” in height. 

The design of this armor is clearly intended to be Gothic – the couters, gauntlets, and cuisses are all classically Maximillian, and the fluting on the surface of the cuirass and elsewhere are undeniably intended to replicate the patterns of 15th – 16th century armors that would exemplify the Gothic style. A brief chain skirt protects the lower body, and an s-guard longsword (possibly intended to imply Swiss inspiration, perhaps a mercenary) is held in the right hand. While the suit is not fully articulate, the helm can rotate and the visor can be raised if so desired.

The Victorian origins, style of armor reproduced, and non-articulating construction of the piece points to this piece’s likely purpose as a collectible for a wealthy patron. The nineteenth-century “Gothic revival” obsession likely resulted in many such reproductions being created, which is almost certainly the origin of this piece as well.

This exquisite piece is a Victorian copy of an earlier Gothic-style arm kit including vambrace, rerebrace, and couter. Like so many Victorian reproductions the original has been replicated in exacting detail right down to the rivets and hinges. 

The vambrace and rerebrace both have the attractive ridges of classical Gothic plate, flowing seamlessly into the lines of the armor. The couter is broad and fluted with a raised point at the elbow, providing not only protection but a potentially dangerous weapon in its own right –someone in Gothic plate is never unarmed. Despite its age the armor has only a light patina in some areas, retaining its luster and sheen – clearly, this piece was well cared for in its life as an antique. An attractive centerpiece for any collection, this Gothic arm armor comes to us from a prestigious collection and is now available for purchase for one fortunate collector.
