In Norse culture, skalds were a special class of storyteller, poet, and historian who carried and passed on their people's mythology. The Darksword Armory Skald is inspired by those keepers of Viking Legend. A long, broad-based blade suitable for the slashing combat style used by Viking raiders terminates in a sharply pointed tip, and is polished to a mirror finish. A 5 lobed pommel design as described by Jakobsson in Krigarideologi och vikingatida svärdstypologi is complimented by a simple cross guard often seen on Type X swords and earlier. Unique Darksword’s design, the skald has a double fuller - rarely seen, if ever, in the historical surviving artifacts. A suitable companion for a warrior poet, the Darksword Armory skald is a crisp and a classic design for fans of Viking weaponry

This is a folded steel version of one of our best selling swords....The Guardlan. The blade is forged in the traditional Japanese folded steel method, creating a beautiful and original pattern, created by multiple layers of folded steel.

The Guardlan Viking Sword is a blend of history and modern design. Taking its inspiration from Norse culture, this battle-ready sword is hand forged and fully functional. A unique two-handed version of a traditional Viking design, the broad blade is significantly longer than our single-handed designs. The extra heft of the sword would be absolutely devastating in battle, capable of broad slashes that could cut down a warrior in his prime – or sweep an attacker from horseback.

More information on the Guardlan Viking Sword and the inspiration which led to its creation can be found below

The Urnes Staves Viking Sword is our tribute to one of the most beautiful structures in Norway. Named for the 12th-century church which inspired its knotwork designs, this one-handed Viking Sword is a battle-ready weapon. The Urnes Staves Viking Sword is a hand forged, modern take on a classic, 10-11th century Viking weapon. Like many historical Viking Swords the blade is rigid, wide, and deeply fullered, allowing it to be an extremely effective cutting and slashing weapon. The Ebony handle is carved with knotwork from its namesake church, and the bronze fittings bear the same delicate designs. The Urnes Staves Viking Sword is Darksword’s latest Viking Sword, and is both beautiful and functional.

More information on the Urnes Staves Viking Sword and the history of the world in which it originated can be found below.

Doomed gods walked among men, gathering their strength for the final battle at the end of the world.
11th century Viking Sword with bronze fittings,
The National Museum of Finland, Helsinki

The 11th Century Viking Sword is based on a sword found near Suontaka, Finland, in the grave of a Viking Shield-maiden. It is full tang, tempered, and fully functional, with a blade forged and balanced to be a devastatingly effective cutter. The bronze fittings, created by use of the lost wax process, are based on the historical fittings of the Suontaka Shield-maiden’s weapon. An homage to a true historical artifact, the 11th Century Viking Sword is one of our longest-running designs.

More information on the 11th Century Viking Sword and the history of the world in which it originated can be found below.

10th - 11th Century A.D.
Inspirational piece, based on Norse Knot work and Viking art.

Just before the turn of the century, a semi-popular Michael Crichton novel, Eaters of the Dead, was made into a film. The film re-imagined the story of Beowulf as told by an Arabic poet, who starts his journey as an ambassador and ends it in the company of Viking warriors fighting off an almost supernatural foe. The movie was plagued by production problems and baffled moviegoers and critics alike, especially when Antonio Bandaras – a fine actor, but a Spanish one – was cast as the Arabic poet.

It crashed at the box office but gained a cult following, especially for its fighting scenes and for the mighty Viking warrior Buliwyf with his massive (probably not historical) two handed Viking sword. Opinions among Darksword staff are sharply (heh) divided as to if the film is any good. We leave it to you to decide - if you’d like to see a movie with an Arab played by a Spaniard, Vikings played by Scotsmen, and Bears played by naked men in body paint, this is the B-List movie for you.

The British Museum in London.

800-950 AD

A distinctive, instantly recognizable design, the 5 Lobe Viking Sword is our modern remake of a classic blade. Inspired by the simple yet well-made work of the Norse smiths, the clean lines and subdued fittings of the 5 Lobe Viking Sword mark it as a weapon of a seasoned Viking warrior, not a king or a lord. Yet even this deceptively simple weapon shows the signs of the generations of steelcraft that made the Viking raiders so formidably armed. A wide, straight, double-edged blade adorned with a broad fuller and terminating in a spatulate tip marks it as a Norse weapon, the family resemblance to other Viking swords clearly apparent. The leather-wrapped handle provides a comfortable grip, and the polished steel fittings - including the 5-lobed pommel that gives this sword its name - are powerful, yet subtle. A weapon for a warrior on the front lines, the 5 Lobe Viking Sword will serve you well wherever your voyages take you.
