The Saga of the Volsungs, also known as the Völsunga saga, is one of our most famous surviving epic works of prose in Old Norse. A 13th century work based on a much older myth and Legend. In these sagas, Viking warriors were masters of the axe, a weapon as vital to their survival as it was to their conquests. Unlike the shorter, handier axes, the Langox, or Long Axe, is fitted on an extended shaft, a crucial design element that allowed for devastating, far-reaching swings in close-quarters battle. This offers superior reach and leverage for powerful, decisive blows.

Drawing inspiration from excavated axe heads, our team has forged the axe while keeping the form and functionality of the Dane or Broadaxe – weapons renowned for their immense cutting power and extended range. Every curve of the blade, every detail of the haft, reflects a weapons that shaped an era.

Viking Axe head (width): 6”
Viking Axe head (Hight) 10” long
Weight: 3 lbs. 5 oz.

The Gudrun Norse Viking Axe

Named for the shieldmaiden, hero, and architect of one of the most bloody and decisive revenge stories in Norse lore, the Gudrun Norse Viking Axe is our newest axe design. From the pages of the Völsunga saga, Gudrun (Guðrún) is a stirring tale of someone pushed too far until the weight of her many burdens causes her to take matters into her own hands and leaves a bloody and fiery swath of destruction behind her as a result. Decorated with a Viking knotwork design depicting the Midgard Serpent, this long-bladed and straight-necked Viking axe is a design both classic and capable. Its hardwood handle provides a stable and comfortable grip, and is long enough to provide the torque needed for powerful blows against Shield, helmet, or enemy. A balance between functionality and work of art, the Gudrun Norse Viking Axe would do any Viking proud - especially shieldmaidens on a path to revenge.

Total Length : 47”
Viking Axe head (width): 9”
Viking Axe head (hight) 12” long
Weight: 4 lbs. 12 oz.

*NEW* This is our most recent Norse Viking Axe. We are very proud of this axe. It is light, versatile, beautifully made and most importantly, destructive !

The Chieftain Dane Axe, inspired by the Norse Sagas, is a true war axe, nearly 4 ft from end to end. The hardwood handle is extended to provide extra reach and torque for powerful, helmet splitting blows. Leather wrap on the mid-handle improves the grip, while the tapered end of the handle creates a comfortable place for extending the reach of the weapon. The head of the axe is carefully inscribed with the visage of a ferocious wolf depicted with Norse knotwork, certainly one of our most beautiful axe designs. The steeply dropping edge of the bearded axe head creates a cutting edge nearly a foot long, which went backed by the significant weight of the weapon is truly fearsome. By bringing this axe into your home, you bring a piece of legend with it - while we sit and wait for the sun devourer, it will surely keep you safe.

In Scandinavian, Birger means to “help and protect” – a name fitting for a beastly Norse axe. Inspired by the Midgard Serpent from Norse Mythology who is depicted in Norse knotwork on the head, the Birger Norse Viking axe is based on designs by the migration period of the Nordic people. The design of the head gives the axe a steep beard and long cutting edge, while keeping a solid neck and sharp spurs to reinforce and strengthen it for battle. Nearly 4 ft from end to end, the hardwood handle is extended to provide extra reach and torque for powerful, helmet (and head) splitting blows. Axes like this are one reason why an encounter with Viking raiders in the ancient world was so feared, and why their legends are still spread today.

*NEW* This is our most recent Norse Viking Axe. We are very proud of this axe. It is light, versatile, beautifully made and most importantly, destructive !

The Fenrir Viking axe is named after the ancient wolf from Norse mythology who will usher in Ragnarök and the end of all things. A bearded axe with a deep dropped point, the Fenrir is one of our latest designs and is deeply inspired by Norse history and prophecy. The stained wood handle is wrapped in leather and treated to resist the elements, and the leather wrap is riveted at multiple points along the handle. Intricate knotwork depicting a wolf's head is inlaid into the metal of the axe. The full length is nearly 4 ft long, and this hefty weapon certainly needs the reach - it promises to deliver devastating blows should the need arise. For fans of Viking myth and legend, or even just fans of Viking aesthetic and weaponry, the Fenrir acts is fit for a chieftain.

From the pages of Norse mythology comes the Lawgiver. So named for Forseti, Norse god of justice, fairness, and reconciliation, the Lawgiver is a bearded Viking axe with beauty and presence. The head of this axe is decorated with Viking knotwork, a savage design reminiscent of the dragon figureheads on Viking longships. The dropped edge of the axe head creates a longer cutting edge while reducing the weight. The treated hardwood handle is wrapped in leather, ready to ride on your belt or back while you tread through the hills or go raiding with your war party.

This Viking axe sits at the balance point between form and function. While reputed as a fierce weapon, the Viking axe was, at times, decorated with intricate, artistic designs and carefully created knot work. Similarly to the Viking sword and jewellery, the surviving relics of the Viking age point to an important level of appreciation to art that runs counter to the popular perception of Vikings as barbarians. The Norse Viking axe is inspired by Norse sagas and historical counter parts. Mainly fantasy in nature, the head depicts a great serpent in mammen style knot work. The Norse Viking axe head is 8'' wide and 11'' long. The total length is 34"

The axe has existed in human evolution from its earliest form. Changing with function and form. During the 8th and 9th century, axes were commonly used for domestic needs. As the migration period began, so did the evolution of the Viking axe. From an agricultural and daily tool of survival to that of war. The Viking Axe became the most essential tool of the Norse kingdom as they were essential for daily life and war. As this need evolved during the migration age, the Viking axe gradually transitioned in shapes and size.
