Reason of sale: the sword was made with fittings that have not passed our quality control. The blade has some surface scratches. There are minor blemishes on the guard. In hand, the sword feels present and certainly an excellent and powerful weapon for defense for the high nobility in France and Italy during the 16th century.
As the 15th century transitioned into the 16th, the nature of European conflict shifted dramatically. The widespread adoption of firearms and the evolution of lighter, more articulate plate armor prompted a parallel evolution in civilian and military sidearms. This one of a kind piece is inspired from the late Renaissance Side Sword (Spada da Lato), capturing the exact historical moment where medieval cutting power met the complex, defensive hand-protection of the early modern era. This side sword bridges the gap between the classic medieval arming sword and the later, fully developed swept-hilt rapier. It is a dedicated military and dueling weapon designed to be worn on a daily basis by the gentry and nobility.
The blade is engraved with “Noblesse Oblige” (Nobility Obligates). This etching reflects the late-period custom of personalizing blades with family crests, religious iconographies, or philosophical reminders of a knight’s duty to honor, courage, and society.
