Reason of sale: This Great sword was created with parts that have not passed our quality control tests (minor Aesthetic flaws). The fittings and blade show some minor blemishes (see image gallery for details).  The sword is a one of a kind piece. The guard and pommel have been blued (blackened) and grip was dyed with a dark plum finish. 

This one of a kind Darksword Armory “Great Swords dominated European battlefields during the late 13th and 14th centuries. Engineered to answer the transition from chainmail to early plate armor, this piece perfectly captures the balance of brutal cutting power and sophisticated blade geometry prized by medieval knights.

From an academic perspective, this sword aligns closely with the Oakeshott Type XIIIa—the quintessential “Great Sword of Germany” (Grans Espees de d’Allemis). Characterized by its broad, imposing presence and nearly parallel edges that taper gracefully into a functional point, this typology was favored for its devastating delivery of residual force in a sweeping cleave.

The defining feature of this blade is its striking full-length fuller, engineered historically to reduce the overall mass of the weapon without sacrificing structural integrity or torsional rigidity. The fuller runs nearly the entire length of the 34-inch blade, giving the sword a lively, responsive feel in the hand despite its substantial proportions.

The hilt assembly features a classic, minimalist straight crossguard (Oakeshott Style 1), providing excellent hand protection while maintaining a clean, utilitarian aesthetic. It is counterbalanced by a stunning, multi-faceted scent-stopper pommel (Type T), which optimizes the pivot point of the weapon for fluid, high-velocity transitions. The elongated two-handed grip is meticulously wrapped in rich oxblood leather with a distinct central riser, ensuring an unyielding, ergonomic hold during standard or transitional guards.
