Runes had a very symbolic, personal and spiritual role in Viking culture. Unlike modern alphabet, Viking Runes were more than mere letters used to form a sentence and message. For the Vikings, Runes had important metaphysical and magical virtues. Runes were regarded with great importance. They served to convey ones destiny, as protection and to communicate with the spiritual world. They were regarded as magical and having powers to protect, elevate, and foretell future events. They were also a connection from the natural to the supernatural world. As such, Runes were craved everywhere in Norse culture. On sword blades, jewelry, grave sites, ships and even invaded monasteries. They were used as symbols of protection.

Finely crafted from .925 Sterling silver, the Mammen axe is an authentic scaled reproduction of the original.

From the 5th to the 11th centuries CE the Island of Great Britain was inhabited and ruled over by the Anglo-Saxons. A race descended from the Germanic tribes who emigrated to the island mixed with the indigenous peoples they encountered, the Anglo-Saxons were the founders of the nation of England. Up until the Norman Conquest of the 11th century the culture of the Anglo-Saxons dominated the Isle, and many aspects of that culture remained to shape and inform the nation that was born out of the invasion of William the Conqueror.

In Norse mythology Mjölnir is the hammer of Thor, a major Norse god associated with thunder. Mjölnir is depicted in Norse mythology as one of the most fearsome weapons, capable of leveling the most fearsome opponents and armies. Ultimately used by Thor to destroy the Midgard Serpent in the battle of Ragnarök. In his account of Norse mythology Snorri Sturluson describes how the hammer was made by Sindri and Brokkr, two Dwarf borthers.

Odin Allfather, called the Wanderer, called the Enemy of the Wolf, is chief and mightiest of the Norse gods. A powerful warrior and father to many powerful gods including Thor, Odin rules over the gods but also walks among men as an old man, bent with age and leaning on a staff. A prominent figure in a majority of surviving Norse myths, it would take a book or two to fully recount all of his deeds – however, one that is prophesied to occur yet in the future is his death at Ragnarök.

While Vikings have a reputation as tough, rough, and (according to most media about them) almost certainly filthy, these beliefs are not necessarily accurate – especially the one about hygiene. What we now know about Vikings is that they were big believers in cleanliness and beauty, often spending time and valuables on their appearance.
