In
J. R. R. Tolkien's
Middle-earth,
Faramir is a fictional character appearing in
The Lord of the Rings. He is
introduced as the younger brother of Boromir and second son of Denethor II, the
Steward of the realm of Gondor. A
warrior poet, Faramir took arms to defend what he loved; Freedom and justice.
"War must be,
while we defend our lives against a destroyer who would devour all; but I do not
love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor
the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend: the city of the
Men of Numenor; and I would have her loved for her memory, her ancientry, her
beauty, and her present wisdom. Not feared, save as men may fear the dignity of
a man, old and wise."
(The Two Towers:
"The Window on the West," p. 280)
Tolkien
would write that of all characters Faramir resembles the author most, and that
he had deliberately bestowed upon the character several traits of his own.
