Two Handed Medieval Sword

:: Two Handed War Sword ::

Johannes von Eglofstein was a military leader in early 15th Century Germany. He was also the founder of the University of Wurzberg, which he caused to be built after being elected Bishop of Wurzberg in 1400. This came as a result of his victory as commander of the victorious army in the Battle of Bergtheim, where the nobility and ecclesiastical forces put down a rebellion against the church by various territorial towns. He ruled as bishop and was involved in several famous battles and peace negotiations in the area until his death in 1411. Rumours say that he was poisoned.

Here, Johannes’ sword is reproduced as a two handed war sword typical of 15th Century design. The hilt is a rain-guard type, style XX according to Oakeshott’s typology, with an interesting edged pommel design. The handle is leather wrapped, and the long, broad blade is typical of many swords from that era. It is a good example of a war
sword from the early 15th Centruy, and likely is very similar to what Johannes himself would have used when leading his army into battle.
