:: Roman Sword ::
The Roman Legion was the defining fighting force in Europe
during the rule of the Roman empire. Their extremely effective tactics
influenced warfare for centuries afterwards, and their strength in arms allowed
the Roman Empire to expand to become one of the biggest domains in history. In
modern times, their abilities and distinctive weaponry are popularized by movies
such as Gladiator and Spartacus. One of their most recognizable weapons is the
short thrusting sword know as the gladius.
The gladius was used with brutal effectiveness against the
lightly armoured or unarmored enemies that would encounter the Legion, and
though primarily designed as a thrusting weapon was capable of delivering
savage cuts as well. The Legionnaire Sword is based on such a design,
leaning closer towards the Mainz style of gladius as opposed to the Pompeii
style. The Pompeii had parallel edges and a triangle tip, whereas this
Legionnaire sword has a leaf shaped blade and elongated tip. The Legionnaire
sword has the standard wood fittings and bone grip, and is an attractive
interpretation of this popular historical sword. This gladius would remain
the standard weapon for the average Roman Legion soldier, until it was
eventually phased out and replaced by the longer Spatha, which was
originally a cavalry weapon. Despite this, it remains a much-loved design by
modern sword collectors everywhere.
