The Saxon
The
Saxons
were
a confederation of Germanic tribes, first
inscribed in the 2nd C. AD by Ptolemy.
Originally believed to date to the 5th C. AD, some scholars, as Ewart Oakeshott, date this medieval sword to the late
eighth century, dating the sword to the period of the "Saxon Wars"
(772 – 804) which
ultimately led to the incorporation of the
Saxons into the Frankish Empire.
With defeat, came the enforced baptism and conversion of the Saxon leaders
and their people. Under Carolingian rule, the Saxons were reduced to tributary
status.
